High Voltage Technician

This is a senior-level High Voltage Technician role in an industrial setting, responsible for supporting and maintaining electrical systems from 480V up to 138kV. The work includes maintaining and troubleshooting transformers, switchgear, and breakers, performing preventive maintenance, running electrical tests, reviewing prints, updating procedures, and making sure all work is done safely using proper lockout/tagout practices.

You’ll also be involved in commissioning new equipment, working with utility providers, and keeping power systems stable and reliable. This role requires NETA Level II certification or equivalent high-voltage testing experience, along with strong leadership, and the ability to work well with a team.

HIGH VOLTAGE TECHNICIANS AT TSP TYPICALLY HAVE THE FOLLOWING JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform preventive maintenance (PM) on all electrical equipment, including 138kV air switches, 138kV SF6 gas circuit breaker, 138kV-13.8kV transformers, 13.8kV-4,160V transformers, 13.8kV-480V transformers, 15kV switchgear, 15kV switch line-ups, 15kV vacuum bottle circuit breakers, 480V switchgear, and 480V rackable circuit breaker
  • Create maintenance schedules, work documents, JHA, work permits, etc., as necessary
  • Troubleshoot and repair electrical equipment, including testing and replacing components as needed
  • Utilize LOTO (lockout/tagout) procedures to isolate hazards during the switching process, ensuring a safe working environment for the team
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams, including engineering, logistics, and factory operations, to ensure that electrical distribution system maintenance aligns with business goals and objectives
  • Develop and approve procedures for preventive maintenance and lockout/tagout
    • This includes reviewing one-line drawings and schematics in this process
  • Oversee contractor performance from time to time in all of the above categories
    • This includes inspection reports of as-found and as-left conditions
  • Perform offline electrical testing on high voltage system
  • Evaluate offline electrical testing results and provide recommendations for servicing or repairs
  • Perform factory acceptance, site commissioning, and site acceptance of high voltage equipment rated 480V-138kV
  • Maintain equipment end-of-life documentation and provide recommendations to update assets for maintainability
  • Evaluate system performance and provide direction on system manipulation to maintain power quality, diversity, and reliability standards
  • Interface with the electric utility companies to ensure site reliability, growth, and interdependent work is coordinated effectively
  • Manage, update, and modify system standard operating procedures (SOPs) to keep up to date with changing industry standards
  • Manage, update, and modify drawings, diagrams, and schematics as required
  • Will be required to lead work efforts in areas of specific expertise in switching operations, testing, and oversight of contractors

THE IDEAL PERSON FOR THIS ROLE WILL HAVE EXPERIENCE SUCH AS:

  • All individuals must have a commitment to the team above self
  • Overtime and call-ins may be required
  • Holds a NETA level 2 certification, OR
  • Have taken the following 3 courses in the last 3-5 years, and have at least 2 years of experience in industrial high voltage testing
    • Industrial Electrical Safety – typically 4 days, 2.8 CEUs | classroom lecture
    • Substation Maintenance I – typically 4.5 days, 3.2 CEUs | classroom lecture and hands-on training
    • Substation Maintenance II – typically 4.5 days, 3.2 CEUs | classroom lecture and hands-on training
